Happy 10 Months, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, & Happy New Year!

We have had a busy December, as I'm sure many of you have too.

Starting off our December with a stay in the hospital wasn't exactly how we would have planned our Christmas season to begin.  But Luke got over his sickness, and we enjoyed our first Christmas as a family of 3.

Quick Update After Hospital Stay

I just wanted to give a quick update after our trip to the ER.  I will post a better blog update with fun pictures later.

Here's just a quick recap of the past week -

Thursday Luke wasn't feeling well, so we went to the doctor (our dr. was on vacation, so we saw someone else).  She diagnosed him with the croup and sent us home (after a cortisone shot & antibiotics).

Friday morning he was worse, so I called the dr.'s office.  The nurse could hear him breathing on the phone and told me to take him to the ER.  This was a little before noon.  Paul Michael met us at the ER.  Once we got there, it didn't take long to get us back.  They agreed that it was the croup - a very severe case.  The plan of action was to give him a breathing treatment (epinephrine & something else, I can't remember) and see how he was 3 hours later. If he was better at the 3 hour mark, they'd send us home.   So, after the first breathing treatment Luke had x-rays of his chest and neck.  Well, it wasn't 30 minutes after the first treatment that the doctor said he'd be admitting us because he breathing had reverted back to the way it was when we came in.

We were in the ER from noon to 5:15.  Luke had a few breathing treatments while we were in the ER and another when we got to PICU.  We had to wait a while for a room in PICU.  I think the ER doctor wanted to send us to PICU rather than PEDS for precaution.  When we got to PICU, the doctor did not seem near as worried at the folks in ER.

The first night he had no breathing treatments.  They gave him an intramuscular steroid in the ER and IV steroids once we got to PICU.  At noon on Saturday they started breathing treatments every 4 hours until 8 am Sunday (this made for a harder night Saturday night).  And they discontinued the steroids at 2 pm Saturday.

Since he was still doing good, we came home about noon Sunday.

After a few breathing treatments and steroids Friday, Luke was feeling better.  He would make eyes and talk to all his nurses.  He enjoyed the attention!

Today, he seemed like is normal self!  He still has a bit of a cough.  But he is crawling all over the house.  One of his favorite things to do (that he knows he's not supposed to) is climb the stairs when the gate is open.  And that was all he wanted to do today.  I couldn't take my eyes off him.  He keeps me on my toes, but I'm glad.
